While I am aware that the issue of changing usernames is a topic that has been brought up, I've been discussing it quite commonly and have a suggestion. After doing some research on websites where you are somewhat/totally able to change your name, along with discussing it with friends, I suggest two options...
Similar to a game called Maple Story:DA could charge a reasonable fee for a user to change a username.
Maple story charges $10 US dollars for every username change and resets those names during maintenance moments.
This could benefit both parties. We as users would have our new usernames, would not need to resort to making new accounts, or make any of the sacrifices listed below.
DA would benefit by making a profit. (It is a very popular feature on the sites I looked up.)
Similar to Flickr:Users could have their URL name...(the name they're essentially stuck with since it's their site URL) however, with that there could be a Display name.
This display name would be visible on the main page (where our DA name currently is) however unlike our current account names we could change these whenever we needed.
While yes we can simple make another free account, there's a lot to sacrifice. (While this may not be important to you, it's important to many)

Time on DA

All your work, it would require enormous amounts of time to transfer the work.

Friends, notifying and re-friending a lot of people.
